像穿衣服一樣,很多英文詞語是不能錯配亂搭的。應用語言學(Applied Linguistics)稱之為 “Collocation”,中文譯為「搭配」,指經常搭配著用的詞語,如濃茶為 “strong tea”而不可說 “thick tea”;濃湯是 “thick soup”卻不可說是 “strong soup”。
我的學生經常犯了錯配的毛病,看似同義的字,卻不能胡亂搭配。試看看下列左欄內的字如何與右欄內的字搭配:
1. say A. an opinion
2. tell B. a sigh
3. deliver C. a word
4. voice D. politics
5. declare E. a few words
6 discuss F. nonsense
7. talk G. English
8. speak H. war
9. pronounce I. a story
10. utter J. a speech
請你說幾句話是Please “say” a few words. (1E);說故事是 “tell” a story (2I);發表演說是 “deliver” a speech (3J);發表意見卻要說 “voice” an opinion (4A)。宣戰要說 “declare” war(5H);論政要說 “discuss” politics (6D);說廢話要用 “talk” nonsense (7F)。他能說英語是 He can “speak” English (8G); 他能正確地唸這字是 He can “pronounce” the word correctly (9C)。 這次介紹的詞語,每一個都有固定的搭配,配錯了老師又怎能不發出嘆息呢 “utter” a sigh (10B)?
多讀多聽多用 熟能生巧
說到底,要熟習英語詞彙和要用得正確,別無他法,多讀多聽多用,自然熟能生巧。搭配(Collocation)這概念在英語世界裡非常重要,一些諺語(Proverbs)和慣用語(Idioms)都不能改變原文,固定的說法便須牢記。 ■韓Sir
