(Four Views of the Flowering Plum)
(Handscroll, ink on paper)
(Yang Wujiu,1097 – 1169,Southern Song dynasty)
Documenting the four phases of the plum blossom from budding to wilting, the scroll is actually made up of four separate paintings ending with a poem composed by the painter himself.
In the scroll, the trunks are textured with a dry brush, with occasional flying-whites in the last section, while the branches with a wet one. These contrast with the flowers, whether budding or in full bloom, which are outlined swiftly as if in calligraphy in a single stroke.
