Wedjat-eye amulet
Egypt,26th Dynasty(1000 – 700 BC)
The wedjat-eye is one of the most ubiquitous forms of Egyptian amulets, representing the eye of the falcon-god Horus. Ripped out by the god of chaos Seth, it was later restored to Horus, and is thus interpreted as a protective symbol. Wedjat-amulets were worn in life, but also included in burials, where they were often placed near the embalmer’s incision into the body, to magically heal the cut. Here, the basic form is further developed, as the normal drop and curl beneath the eye are replaced with falcon legs and wing. Beneath lies a bound matt of reeds upon which rests another eye, a papyrus plant and a rearing cobra with sun-disc.
