Jade Horse

戰國 Warring States Period(公元前475 - 前221年)

Qufu Administrative Committee of Cultural Relics

Jade horse was first discovered in the tomb of Fu Hao in Anyang. The horse is flat with eyes in the shape of the Chinese character “臣”.Realistic, three-dimensional, free-standing jade horse sculptures appeared during the Warring States Period, and it was in a large tomb of that era that this jade horse was found. It was probably a ritual object used in sacrifices, banquets, pre-battle ceremonies and funerals. The stone of this free-standing jade sculpture of a horse is green with red patches. Standing on a rectangular base, the horse holds its head high and is looking to the front, while its mane is standing on end and its tail is knotted. The eyes and mouth are outlined with indented lines. Because of the vivid portrayal, this piece is considered an exceptional example of ancient jade horses.
