談到連接詞，大家通常會先想到and、but等單詞。其實在英文文法中，有一類連接詞叫paired conjunctions（配對連接詞）或 correlative conjunctions（相關連接詞），由兩個或以上的詞語組成，例如：
1.both... and
2.either... or
3.neither... nor
4.not only... but also
文法結構 必須對稱
以paired conjunctions連接起來的文字，文法結構須對稱，例如：
1.Both+名詞+and+名詞：Both my mother and my sister will attend my graduation ceremony.（母親和姐姐都會出席我的畢業典禮。）
2.Either+名詞+or+名詞：I have lent my book to either Mary or John.（我把書本借給了瑪麗或者約翰。）
3.Neither+動詞+nor+動詞：I can neither sing nor dance.（我不會唱歌或跳舞。）
4.Not only+形容詞+but also+形容詞：This film is not only entertaining but also thought-provoking.（這部電影不但富娛樂性，而且發人深省。）
如果說「This film not only is entertaining but also thought-provoking.」句中not only之後是「動詞+形容詞」，but also之後卻只有形容詞，就犯了不對稱的錯誤。
最近動詞 決定單複
若paired conjunctions所連接的是主語，句中動詞應採用單數形式還是複數形式？那就要看用了哪一組連接詞。用both... and連接主語時，動詞採用複數形式，如：「Both my grandmother and my mother live with me.」（祖母和母親都和我一起生活。）用either... or、neither... nor或not only... but also時，則要看最靠近動詞的主語是單數還是複數，例如：1.Neither my grandmother nor my mother lives with me.（因為最近動詞的是my mother，所以用單數形式的lives。）
2.Neither my grandmother nor my parents live with me.（因為最近動詞的是my parents，所以用複數形式的live。）
否定語後 用倒裝句
Either... or、neither... nor或not only... but also也可以用來連接句子（both... and則通常不用於連接句子），例如：
1.Either you will love his novels, or you will hate them.（你要不就會很喜歡他的小說，要不就會很討厭他的小說。）
2.Neither did he call his parents, nor did he write to them.（他沒有致電給父母，也沒有寫信給他們。）
3.Not only does Mrs. Lee take care of Peter, but she also treats him like her own son.（李太不但照顧彼得，而且待他如自己的兒子。）
要注意的是，在neither、nor和not only這類否定語後面，須用倒裝句（inversion），例如把「he called...」寫成「did he call...」，故屬於較難掌握的句式。
