中國是禮儀之邦，其實在西方文化中亦有很多禮節。英文稱之謂etiquette，即是在不同場合，該表現出恰當的行為，包括在餐桌上、社交言談中、商務往來甚至運動比賽等，都要講究特定的禮儀。這些禮節和行為其實是禮貌和尊重他人的表現。與禮貌有關的英文字有好幾個，包括politeness、good manners、courtesy及civility。
Keep a civil tongue in your head 慎言謹行
Civility是名詞，來自形容詞 civil，形容人有禮貌，類似 polite、well-mannered、courteous，但civil不僅是有禮貌，還帶有客氣、客套的意味，有點拘謹。
The new neighbor is not particularly friendly, but his manner is quite civil.
新搬來的鄰居並不特別友善，不過態度很客氣。
You should try at least to be civil in such a formal situation.
在這樣正經的場合，你至少應該保持尊重。
以civil一字構成的英文諺語有Keep a civil tongue in your head（腦裡常常記着言談要有禮），用來告誡人不要無禮，要客客氣氣。
Mind your words. Keep a civil tongue in your head and behave yourself.
應該慎言。常常記着言談要有禮，行為檢點。
Not have a civil word to say about 乏善可陳
另一句是not have a civil word to say about（不能以客氣話形容）。即是說，想客套地讚美幾句也不能，實在沒有讚美的言辭用得上，形容某些人乏善可陳。
We don't have a civil word to say about our supervisor. He is not only lazy, but also irresponsible.
對於我們的上司，我們實在沒有甚麼好話可說。他不但懶惰，還不負責任。
再回到civility這名詞。這個字通常作不可數名詞，單數，泛指禮貌。
He is a gentleman who always treats people with civility.
他是有風度的紳士，常常以禮待人。
The committee draws up a code of behavior to promote civility.
委員會制訂了一套行為守則，推廣以禮待人的態度。
不過，civility有時亦可以是眾數civilities，即是一些客套話或顯示客氣的動作。
The meeting started with some civilities but ended with heated arguments.
會議開始時，大家都先客套一番，但最終以激烈爭辯收場。
The members are not very close; they exchange civilities but nothing else.
成員之間交情不深。大家都只交流一些客套話，沒有其他。
有人說，禮多人不怪，與人相處保持禮貌，人際關係總會比較良好。待人有禮，即是尊重別人。■Lina CHU
