英語有很多慣用語(Idioms)，十九世紀著名英國詩人Walter Savage Landor 甚至把idioms 推崇為「語言的生命和靈魂」“the life and spirit of language” ，而任何作家都必須擁有巨大的慣用語詞庫，才能成為好作家。
我的學生都同意必須擴大自己的詞庫，但每每知易行難。我通常教他們用不同的方法去記憶不同的慣用語，先介紹給大家其中一組：「眼、耳、口、鼻都用到，聽講讀寫技巧高。」
很多英語慣用語(Idioms)是與身體各部分有關的，試把eye(s), ear(s), mouth(s), nose(s) 填入下列各句子的空格內：

以上各慣用語的解釋依次序是：小心看管(keep an eye on)，僅能餬口(live from hand to mouth)，循規蹈矩(keep one's nose clean)， 細心聆聽(lend me your ears)， 耳聽八方(keep an ear to the ground)， 識貨之人(have an eye for a bargain)，完全受控(Be led by the nose)，口頭消息(word of mouth)。是否眼耳口鼻都用到？
有趣兼有用的英語慣用語多的是，只要大家多留意，花少許心思組織自己的記憶系統，相信不難解決這項英語疑難也！
