Built in the 1840's, D'Aguilar Street is named after the then General Officer commanding the garrison and Lieutenant-Governor, George Charles D'Aguilar. When Major General D'Aguilar arrived in Hong Kong in 1842, his residence was situated here. Later he moved to the newly constructed Flagstaff House east of D'Aguilar Street. The building was also known as Headquarter House (The Flagstaff House Museum of Teaware today). To support the reclamation project, many infrastructure works were in progress on Hong Kong Island in the mid 19th century. The government was building major roads to the Mid-Levels.
