中國商船「耆英」號/1848

在這幅色彩豐富的石版畫之上的主角是「耆英」號，畫家運用裝飾性的手法，非常仔細地描繪船身的各種花紋和圖案，船身的中式彩繪尤其華麗奪目。船頭的「眼睛」是傳統中國商船的特徵，航海人員相信這樣可幫助船隻「看」到它的航道。
「耆英」號是第一艘橫越非洲好望角的中國商船，用柚木製成，能負重八百公噸，無論在速度或堅固程度各方面也絕不比西洋輪船遜色。它經歷了多番惡劣的天氣和風浪也無重大損傷，並且在廿一日內由美國駛至英國，就連當時的美國郵船亦不一定能以這樣短的時間完成這段航程。故此，「耆英」號是中國造船業值得引以為傲的例子。
From this colourful lithograph, we can see the Chinese junk Keying depicted in a highly decorative style. The patterns on the ship are meticulously and lavishly painted. The two eyes on the bow on the exterior were characteristic of Chinese merchant ships. Seamen believed that these eyes could 「see」 sea route and lead the way. ■資料：香港藝術館提供
