Shen Quan was a native of Wuxing, Zhejiang province. He was competent in painting bird-and-flower and figures and executed in the gongbi (meticulous) style with a high degree of verisimilitude and a charming colour palette. His painting style was influenced by Huang Quan of the Five dynasties and also the Academy Style of the Ming dynasty. He was particularly skilful at live sketching. His paintings are noted for meticulous and delicate brushwork. In 1731, he was invited to teach painting in Japan for three years. After that, Shen was highly regarded and had many pupils.
