The lacquered dou vessel comprises a lotus-shaped dish, a phoenix head, a phoenix body, phoenix claws and a snake. The parts are attached to the round box with mortises and tenons, and then adhered into place with lacquer. The lotus-shaped dish is created by hollowing-out and carving. Beneath the dish is a phoenix-shaped handle. The dou demonstrates unusual design and exquisite craftsmanship. The lotus is a native plant, while the phoenix and the snake are connected with the myths and legends of the Chu Kingdom; and perhaps for these reasons, their images are commonly seen on lacquered ware from Chu culture.
