1850年代,上環進行了一次填海,乍畏街是在新填地上開闢的街道之一。
由於街上有很多出售蘇州及杭州絲綢的店舖,市民稱其為蘇杭街。約1980年,政府亦將中文街名正式定為蘇杭街。
由1850至1930年代,香港的年宵花市是設在蘇杭街和附近的文咸街,之後,移往灣仔修頓球場。到了1956年,再移往維多利亞公園。

Jervoir's Street is lying on the reclaimed land in Sheung Wan. The land reclamation started in 1850s.
As there were many shops sold the silk products of Suzhou and Hangxhou, the street's Chinese name called "Su-Hang"street. The Chinese name was recognized by the Government in 1980s.
From 1850s to 1930s, Hong Kong's lunar new year fair was held in Jervois Street and the adjacent Bonham Strand. In 1930s,the fair removed to Southern Playground, Wan Chai. And then removed to Victoria Park in 1956s. ■鄭寶鴻 香港歷史博物館名譽顧問
