Doctors: Watch your waist, not trousers !

¡@¡§Pot belly¡¨ is widely recognized as a warning sign for mid-section obesity, but some doctors have pointed out that many people mistakenly take the waist measurements of their trousers as those of their physical girths and unknowingly subject themselves to the threat posed by midsection obesity.

¡@A recent survey revealed three out of every ten heart disease patients had oversized middle area and only a quarter of them had benefited from fat-reducing measures, though over 70 percent of them said they were watching their waist (weight). Doctors say one must commit themselves to regular exercise and correct way of measuring waist line in order to prevent midsection obesity.

¡@Sixty-three year-old Hui Kin-shum said he had slicked to one bowl of rice each meal and regular exercise since he had a heart attack in 2003. And he always thought his physical waist was 34 inches because that was the measurement of his pants until his doctor told him it was actually 41 inches. ¡§I was shocked¡¨, he admitted.

¡@Dr. Lee Pui-yin, a cardiologist, said noting the right way to measure one¡¦s waist circumference is at the middle point between one¡¦s ribcage and pelvis, he said normally a waist girth of 34.6 inches or more means over-sized midsection for Asian men and 31.5 inches for their female counterparts. He said he was very concerned that 37 percent of men and 42 percent of women in Hong Kong are certified with midsection obesity, as an international survey of midsection obesity published in July indicates.

¡@He furthered explained that people with midsection obesity are more likely to develop metabolic syndrome, a condition where one's important internal organs are wrapped up by too much fat, which impedes normal metabolism by releasing toxic substances into the blood stream. That is why people with midsection obesity are more likely to develop heart conditions, hyperlipidemia (too much fat in the blood), hypertension and diabetes than normal people.
