The spread of indecent photos showing persons suspected to be local entertainers in bed has exposed a moral vacuum in Hong Kong society and poisoned the soul of the younger generation.
A recent survey found 60 percent of the respondents had viewed the dirty pictures, of them 70 percent felt disturbed by the images, and 90 percent thought those photos would have a negative impact on their children and the younger generation as a whole.
A teacher said some secondary school students admitted they were “hooked” to the nude images and found it hard to turn away. Some of them even felt sexually aroused.
A secondary schoolgirl said her boyfriend wanted to “try it” with her after viewing the intimate images. And some parents encouraged their children to see the photos “lest they regret later.”
A psychologist contended by chasing such indecent materials people could become obsessed, and he suggested parents and teachers should reason with the young as soon as possible, before it's too late.
The Media Evangelism Limited conducted the above-said survey online in mid-February and collected 814 eligible questionnaires. The respondents included students, parents and teachers.
The president of a parent-teacher association in Kowloon said some parents had been “hooked” in the first place and bought the magazines carrying those sensational photos. The irony is that their children were punished at school for bringing those magazines to school and share them with their classmates.
Some other parents were so infuriated when they found their children viewing such pictures online that they literally pulled the plug of the computer, triggering verbal fights that turned family members against one another.
Clinical psychologist Dr Chan Kwo-ping pointed out, once becoming obsessed with pornography websites, the younger generation may lose hold of the right moral standard and end up trampling the widely-accepted values. Some of them may even see a human being as no more than a sex toy.
Such an obsession will mar their development, destroy families and divide the society. Therefore it is imperative that parents and teachers provide guidance to the younger generation. ■春生 資深翻譯員
