Hang Seng Bank was founded by Lam Bing-yim, Ho Sin-hang, Leung Chik-wai and Shing Chun-lam in 1933 with initial capital of 100,000 Hong Kong dollars. With new partners contributing more funds, the capital was later increased to 125,000 Hong Kong dollars. Originally a native bank operating as a small moneychanger at 70 Wing Lok Street, the bank relocated to 181 Queen's Road Central only after World War II, then 161-167 Queen's Road Central in 1953, and its business has since expanded into major cities in mainland China, such as Guangzhou and Shanghai. In Chinese, "Hang Seng" means "to last and grow forever".
