Reconstruction of a native bank from Shanghai
民國 (Republican period,1912-1949)
This reconstructed native bank from the Republican period features an original bill storage cabinet and teller counter as well as authentic account records and bills all dating from that era. As a trading port, Shanghai attracted a large number of foreign merchants, and with silver taels and coins not yet standardised, the currency exchange business flourished. Initially, currency exchange was a side business carried out by coal shops, rice dealers and textile stores, but later it became a specialised business of the native banks. Remittance services were also widely available. The native banks existed alongside modern banks until the founding of the People's Republic of China. Only then was the historical role of the native banks brought to an end, after marking an important chapter in China's financial history.
