•Those viviparous seedlings are called droppers. Its elongated shape, with a sharp end, looks like a Chinese brush-hence its Chinese name, "Little Water Pen". This common mangrove species is found in nearly all mangrove swamps in Hong Kong. The tree grows up to 5 m in coastal mudflats. Its droppers can be seen during most of the year, except from May to July.
•The droppers germinate and grow by obtaining nutrients from the mother tree. When ripe, they drop and penetrate into the soft mud and start growing upwards rapidly. This process is named vivipary, and is an unusual reproductive method in plants.
