The massive earthquake that occurred on May 12 in Sichuan threw numerous families in crises and also set off a flood of compassion among Hong Kong residents. In just two days after the natural catastrophe,Hong Kong residents from all walks of life donated more than HK$400 million and relief materials. The total approached HK$800 million with the HK$350 million contributed by the Special Administrative Region Government on May 14.
In the first two days after the devastating quake the Central Government's Liaison Office in Hong Kong(CGLOHK)received representatives of many local enterprises, institutions and organizations to hand their donations to the leading officials there. CGLOHK Director Peng Qinghua and deputy directors Li Gang and Li Guikang accepted the tokens of love and thanked all Hong Kong residents on behalf of the central government as well as the quake victims and the whole nation.
They noted every time a natural disaster happened on the mainland, Hong Kong residents were among the first to offer their help with cash and material donations and this time, the outpouring love and compassion once again fully demonstrated the Chinese nation is one big family and blood is, thicker than water; Hong Kong residents’hearts are with the mainlanders and they feel for the earthquake victims keenly. The officials also promised the donations would go to the stricken areas as soon as possible.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club presented HK$30 million in cash donation to CGLOHK on the morning of May 14 and set up donation boxes at the two race courses as well as its headquarters and betting shops across the territory for staff members and customers to give to the quake victims in Sichuan.
Goldlion Group Chairman Tsang Yin-chi,hard of walking, insisted on handing over HK$10 million on behalf of his company to the CGLOHK. He said, with tears in his eyes, that he had been following the progress of disaster relief on TV and in newspapers and he just could not hold back his tears when he saw the plight of the victims as if he was there with them.
