我找不到一個合適的中譯，能把 “rise to the occasion”這個英語慣用語的神粹表達出來。請看看這段呼籲市民捐款賑災的英文和中文版本：
“Now is the time to act. The Burmese people are on the brink of a massive public health catastrophe and the Chinese people are struggling under rubble of collapsed schools and factories. They need your help. Although we cannot do much to really get them out of their plights, we can, at least, show our sympathy for the victims and compassion for the survivors through donations. Therefore, we are now appealing to all of you to start a donation campaign in your schools. Not only can we contribute donations for and help relieve distress among the victims , we can also take this golden opportunity to educate our children about the importance of rising to the occasion when our fellow human beings are in need of us.”
「各位教育界同工，這兩場發生在我們眼前的浩劫，使我們震驚和悲痛。數百萬的災民在災區流離失所、家破人亡、痛不欲生，我們又焉能坐視不理？所以我們發動籌款運動，呼籲校長、教師、家長和學生捐款，為四川和緬甸災民盡一點綿力，也讓我們的孩子知道：這世界同一夢想，當我們身邊的人，不論國籍、膚色和宗教，需要我們的時候，我們就要站出來，伸出援手。」
譯「站出來」 勉強合原意
執筆寫這呼籲信時，我是先寫了英文版本，然後用同樣思維和感受再寫中文版本。英譯中存在�颿雃h令人感覺別扭的情況，所以我沒有直譯原文，寫起來便暢快得多。在寫到 “educate our children about the importance of rising to the occasion when our fellow human beings are in need of us”這概念時， 我停了下來，因為沒有一個貼切的詞語能把 “rise to the occasion”表達得好。最後我用了「站出來」，也勉強有些配合原意吧。
“Rise to the occasion” 很難翻譯，但例子卻不難找到。從祖國四川這場災難中，我看到了不少 “rise to the occasion”的實例。
中國領導人包括胡錦濤主席和溫家寶總理，都趕到災場視察災情、慰問災民和統籌賑災救人工作，充分顯示領導人「愛民如子」的管治方式，正正做到了 “rise to the occasion”，不單是「隨機應變」、或是「完成任務」，而是拿出了真誠、配合了適切的行動，才配得上稱為 “rise to the occasion”。
全球各地的人們，也在這次災難中 “rise to the occasion”，大家都因應這個 “occasion”—大災難—的出現，立即站出來，各自發揮力量，都要為災民送上能力範圍內的支援，正是 “rise to the occasion”的絕佳舉隅。
“Rise to the occasion” 強調 “occasion”，並非個人目的，也不牽涉私人事務，當這個 “occasion”出現時，便要站出來做事：像甘地為印度的獨立站出來、像曼德拉為南非的黑人人權站出來、像馬丁路德金為美國種族不平等站出來、像哈維爾和昂山素姬為捷克和緬甸的民主人權站出來、像無數其他人物為種種情況而站出來。不為什麼，只為公義和平、民主仁愛，發揮自己的力量，便 “rise to the occasion”。
四川這次大地震再一次證明了中國人民的堅韌和團結，是所有中華兒女的驕傲，但當全世界的眼睛都放在祖國四川大地震的災民時，在我們的西南方，也有數百萬人承受�顜馦Y酸的經歷。緬甸人民受風災蹂躪、受軍政府凌虐，正在呼天搶地，等�饇篕琲漱銧屆A我們是否也應 “rise to the occasion”，扶他們一把？
