清 Qing dynasty
Ink and colour on silk
Yingjizi belongs to the commission from the Qianlong Emperor to paint the Shijun Tu (The Ten Steeds). Giuseppe Castiglione was also commissioned to paint the Bajun Tu (The Eight Steeds). The white horse depicted in this hanging scroll was a tribute presented to the Qianlong Emperor by a sub-group of the Mongols. The painting is accompanied by a poem by the Qianlong Emperor in Chinese and Manchurian scripts. Giuseppe Castiglione completed Yingjizi in 1743 when he was 56. Applying Western techniques, he accurately renders the likeness of the horse in very fine lines and achieves the texture of its fur and the three-dimensional effect with short, quick brush strokes. This painting is an excellent example both of Giuseppe Castiglione's keen observation of nature and of his exceptional technique.
