A horseherd gallops on his mount, the ring of the lasso in his hands already around the neck of the horse in front. But the wilful steed refuses to be tamed so easily and tries to shake off the rope and run away. With broad, robust but effortlessly flowing brushstrokes, the artist Yang Wei renders the horseherd's facial expression and the bearing of the horses in vivid detail and captures the perilous excitement of the battle of strength and wits between man and horse. This was a typical scene in the everyday lives of the Jurchen people, and Yang Wei's painting confirms that these nomads of the north were both expert horse tamers and adept in warfare.
