1842年,一輛來自菲律賓的馬車,在新闢成由灣仔至石塘咀的皇后大道上行走,因而皇后大道被稱為「大馬路」。馬車和馬匹是19世紀香港的主要交通工具。
1903年,有不少馬車公司。當時供出租的馬車分有雙單馬匹的馬車及大型馬車。可是,自電車於1904年出現後,馬車便趨式微。日治時期,馬車又恢復行走。到了戰後,市上再無馬車行走了。

In 1842, a carriage from Philippines dashed through the newly constructed Queen's Road, running from Wan Chai to Shek Tong Tsui, and this was the name of "Big Horse Road" originated. Horses and carriages were the main means of transport in the 19th century of Hong Kong.
In 1903, a number of carriage companies offered horse and carriage service. In 1904, the trams appeared and the carriages began to fade out.
Carriages reran during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. After the World War II, carriages went out of use completely. ■鄭寶鴻 香港歷史博物館名譽顧問
