　同學們問我：「校徽上的英文字母"DBTS"是代表甚麼？」我便考他們，反問：「你認為是甚麼呢？」於是有不同的答案：「Delight, Diligent, Dynamic; Best, Bold, Brave; Talent, Tender, Trust; Smart, Slim, Sunny......」同學七嘴八舌，把所認識帶有"DBTS"字首的詞語，都翻了出來。我聽完，說：「其實校徽上的英文字母"DBTS"是4個拉丁語字的縮寫：D是Delectatio(歡樂)；B是Bonitatis(善)；T是Thesaurus(寶藏)；S是Sapientia(智慧)。」

英文大多源自拉丁語

　在英語世界內，很多字的根源來自拉丁語(Latin)，而我們日常接觸的其實為數不少，如a.m.， p.m.，e.g.，i.e.，ibid.，etc.，et al.，N.B等。這些縮寫的原文是拉丁語，所以for example的縮寫不是e.x.，而是e.g.；N.B.的意思是Note Well。

　 試把表內的拉丁文縮寫填入下列句子內：

1. People in many parts of the world do not even have the basic essentials of life, ____, food, water and housing.(這世界有很多人缺乏生活的基本需要，即食物、水和住屋。)

2. ____The library will be closed from 1st to 30th November for renovation.

(留意：圖書館將於11月1日至30日關閉，進行維修。)

3. His favourite musicians are of all nationalities, _____, Yo-yo Ma, Josh Groban and Joe Hisaishi.(他心愛的音樂家來自不同國籍，如馬友友、祖殊哥班和久石讓。)

4. This is a book edited by John Smith ____.(這本書是約翰史密夫等人編輯的。)
