香港是一個海港，臨海眺望，不時見到大小船隻出海航行。天氣好的時候，風平浪靜，當然沒有問題，但一旦天氣變壞，遇上風暴，風高浪急，處身大海的船隻就非常危險，需要小心航行，有時候或要停船等候，待風暴過去，風浪平息再起航。
船隻經歷了風浪，渡過了難關，平安回航，英文是weather the storm，storm是風暴，而weather在這是動詞，意思是應付、處理、經歷。現在weather the storm這短語引申用於日常，解作經歷了麻煩和困難的時期，成功闖過難關，情況雖然險峻，但平安渡過。
He got sick and lost his job. But he weathered the storm with the support of his family.
他生病並失去工作，不過他在家人支持下闖過難關。
Many small businesses may not be able to weather the storm during this turbulent time.
在這個動盪時期，很多小公司可能抵受不住風浪。
We have to wait and see whether this time the president can weather the political storm.
總統能否安然渡過這場政治風暴，我們還要拭目以待。
另一個選擇是ride out / ride the storm，意思亦一樣，是走過了艱難時間，安然渡過，沒有受傷或受損。如果要簡單一些，也可單單用動詞weather或ride out，同樣是經歷了、捱過了困境的意思。
The situation is not good. We hope that we can ride the storm and that things will improve.
情況不妙。我們希望可以渡過這場風暴，待事情改善。
The company weathered / rode out the recession and survived well.
公司安然渡過了衰退，很好地活了下來。
捱過風浪極不容易，卻有些動物不但不會逃避，偏偏選在風暴時出現，其中有一種鳥類就叫stormy petrel（暴風海燕）。這種海鳥翅膀強壯，會在風高浪急時覓食，靠海浪撐起身體，啄食捲起的生物。所以見到暴風海燕，就知道天氣變壞，風暴將至。
有人讚揚這海鳥意志堅強、不屈不撓，但要記住英文的看法不一樣。英文稱stormy petrel是麻煩來臨的預警，把一個人比喻作stormy petrel，即是說這人專門製造麻煩，喜歡攪動紛爭，一出現就代表將有風波，象徵會有亂局，是不受歡迎的人物。
He is a stormy petrel, causing trouble wherever he goes.
他是一個滋事分子，到處製造麻煩。
She is a stormy petrel at meetings. She argues over nearly everything.
她是會議中的麻煩人，幾乎事事爭拗。
Everyone frowned as he came to the party. They knew he was a stormy petrel.
眾人見他在派對出現都皺起眉頭，大家都知道他喜歡搞事惹爭端。
日常生活中經常有各式各樣的風暴，要weather the storm即是遇到難關就努力跨過，但是千萬不要做stormy petrel，即是不要做麻煩製造者，切勿平白無故弄出諸多是非。■Lina CHU
