[2002-09-10] 英語話你知：敬師日與教師分享樂趣

　若要數老師們於一年中心情最忐忑，最矛盾的日子，大概都離不開九月，因為要收拾暑假的心情重新投入工作，並開始一個忙碌的學年。不過，它同時亦令老師們感到欣慰，因九月十日的敬師日(Teachers’Day)正表達了莘莘學子對老師們辛勤的工作所作出的正面肯定。作為教育工作者的一分子，讓本博士引名人的話，與各位同工共勉之。

　「教育到底是什麼一回事？」相信許多同工在初執教鞭時也有這樣的疑問。JohnW.Gardner　便有以下的見解「The ultimate goal of the educational system is to shift to the individual the burden of ursuing his education.」無獨有偶，我國亦有意念近似的名言：「授之以魚，不如授之以漁」。所以老師的角色不僅在於知識的傳授，而該更重於啟發學生去主動學習。而Ralph Waldo Emerson亦提倡類似的精神。他曾說「The things taught in schools are not an education but the means of an education.」（學校所教授的乃是學習知識的手段，而非知識本身。）

　至於怎樣的教學法才容易為學生所接受呢？美國的一句流行說話「Tell me and I`ll forget. Show me,and I may not remember. Involve me,and I`ll understand.」及Patrick White所說的「I forget what I was taught.I only remember what I have learnt.」亦主張老師們要作學生主道(student-centred)的教學。

　至於偉大的希臘名哲學家柏拉圖（Plato）則曾說「All learning has an emotional base.」（一切的學習皆有感情的基礎。）意思指若老師能與學生建立良好的感情基礎，便能使他們的學習事半功倍。而Carl Jung亦就這方面作更深入及仔細的闡釋「One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material,but warmth is a vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.」

　依此，對學生表示關懷及給予他們溫暖的感覺或許比一切教學法來得更有效、更實際呢！英語詞彙起源話你知「Respec」起源於拉丁文`respectus`，指回望」（look back at），於十六世紀末才漸演變成現時「敬重」的意思。
