The graduates will be looking for jobs in the fall。這裏「the fall」並非是「跌倒」的意思，而是「秋天」。以下談談與「fall」有關的詞句。
用「the fall」來表達「秋天」的意思比用「autumn」較隱晦，秋天常見落葉，有些作者便稱秋天為「the fall of the leaf」。另外，秋是下半年的開始，仿似一年的上升期已過，所以秋天亦可稱為「the fall of the year」。
詞語中包含「fall」而帶有負面意思的很多，如「fall short of」、「fall out of step with」和「fallen angel」等。
1.The「comedy」movie fell short of my expcctations—it was quite boring.那齣被稱為喜劇的電影比我預期的差，悶場很多。
2.This change falls out of step with the spirit of the Basic Law.這改變與基本法精神不符合。
3.He lost hundreds of millions of dollars speculating on the real-estate market and is now a fallen angel。他炒樓輸了數億元，現在他是個破產者。（「a bankrupt」是較fallen angel正規的說法）
「fall」有時也表達正面意見。如「fall into one , s lap」，「fall about」：
1.Although she was a green hand, everything fell into her lap。她雖然生手，但事事都得心應手。
2.They were very much amused by the show and were falling about。那場表演非常有趣，他們失控地大笑。
「fall」究竟表示正面或是負面意思，有時很曖昧。
1.The responsibility fell on the Vice Chairman when the Chairman was away.
主席不在場的時候，責任便落在副主席身上。
這個情況是好是壞視乎Vice Chairman認為這是個汲取經驗的好機會抑或是添加了的工作壓力。
