我的預科班學生做閱讀理解(Reading Comprehension)一卷時，經常遇到艱澀的字彙，窒礙了他們的理解，所以我總是不厭其煩地提醒他們：要建立自己的字庫。無論是讀、寫、聽或講，沒有了適切的字彙，就沒可能成功溝通。就好像要煮一味好菜而缺乏了應有的材料一樣，怎能烹出美食？
本地英文公開試的閱讀理解一卷，尤其是高補程度的英語運用當中的試題，經常在較嚴肅的雜誌或報刊摘錄文章，而這類資料性(informative)文章很多時包含了大量「接收字彙」(Receptive Vocabulary)，是學生極少用於日常生活的。我的理科學生只懂拿著試管做實驗，或手執解剖刀𠐟白老鼠，接觸其他文獻機會微乎其微，所以要設計一套有用的字庫，給他們打打「補針」，也許能有多少幫助。今天在此介紹一組字彙，全部是以「ous」為suffix(詞尾)的形容詞，也是公開試經常出現的。
