香港教育界最近似乎是多事之秋，先是傳聞政府高官干預香港教育學院，接著是港大醫學院院長突然辭職，還有城大未能順利選出新校長，同學對此發表意見：
Mary: There are allegations of government meddling in the affairs of Hong Kong Institute of Education.
Peter: Yes, the resignation of the dean of medicine has also cast a shadow over HKU's plans to celebrate the faculty's 120th anniversary.
Mary: What's more, the selection process for CityU's new president flopped, though the two candidates have good track record.
“cast a shadow”解作蒙上陰影
“allegation”源自動詞“allege”，表示涉嫌、嫌疑。“meddle”表示干預或擾亂其他的人或事。跟常用的“interfere”一字的分別是，“meddle”強調無權或未獲允許而作出干預(例子如上)，而“interfere”則強調討厭或阻撓地干預，例如“My mother always interferes us when we scold our kids.”(我的母親總是要干預我們訓斥孩子)。“meddle”是不及物動詞(intransitive verb)，應與前置詞“in”或“with”連用，例如“He is always meddling with other people's business.”(他總愛干預別人的事)。
“cast a shadow”解作蒙上陰影，上面的例子即表示醫學院院長辭職，令港大醫學院慶祝120周年的計劃蒙上陰影。此外，“cast shadows”也可表示預兆，例如“Coming events cast shadows before them.”(事情發生前，必有預兆)。
“flop”為動詞，指跳動、猛然落下或笨拙地拋下，例如“He flopped down into a chair.”(他猛地坐在椅子上)。在英語俗語裡，“flop”卻表示「失敗」，上面的例子即表示城大選新校長的過程失敗了。“good track record”是現在流行的片語，表示過往有良好的政績。
