Foreign Factories in Guangzhou/c. 1820
畫家佚名 油彩布本(Oil on canvas)
The foreign Factories were also known as the “Thirteen Hongs”. “Thirteen” was merely an attribute. The actual number of foreign countries that occupied the district fluctuated. Here the Factories shown from left to right are Spanish, American, Britain and Dutch. As illustrated in this painting, the architecture of the Factories is in western style, featuring arched columns and large verandas. Most of them are two-storey high, with the upper floor as residence and lower floor as office or warehouse.
