Jin Nong was a native of Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. Without having embarked on an official career, he settled in Yangzhou and sold paintings to support himself. Jin was an accomplished scholar, poet, calligrapher and connoisseur when he started to paint at the age of fifty. He assimilated the calligraphic styles of the inscriptions of ancient bronzes and stone stelae into his pictorial works imbuing them with a sense of archaic simplicity and austere bluntness. He also invented a new calligraphic style known as qishu (lacquer script). Jin was a member of the “Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou”.
