(Ink Bamboo)
(Handscroll, ink on paper)
(Ni Zan,1301 – 1374, Yuan dynasty)
Intended as a gift for Ni Zan's friends the brothers Chen Weiyun and Chen Weiyin, the painting consists in a section of a bamboo extending diagonally from left to right. Slender as it is, the main stem is sturdy and unyielding while the leaves cluster sporadically. A prominent landscape master, Ni has his own theories about the representation of bamboos. What he was after was not formal likeness but the association of the image so that the painting can be turned into a vehicle for conveying his feelings.
