花香鳥語：赤鹿

　■體形：約1米高，25－30公斤重。成年的雄性頭上有一對角，並會隨著年齡增加而變大。當繁殖時期，雄性用此角來威嚇情敵。雄性會發出類似狗吠的叫聲以吸引異性，可長達個多小時。牠喜歡獨自生活，並具有「領土」意識。眼下的特別器官能排出一些分泌物，塗抹在樹幹或樹枝上，以劃分「領土」範圍。

　■赤鹿生活在樹林及植物茂密的地方，有時也會「闖進」草地上。愛吃樹葉、花、果實及蔬菜。牠常於黃昏及晚間出來活動及找食物。

Indian Muntjac

　■Adults are about 1 m tall and weigh 25 to 30 kg.Fully-grown males have a pair of antlers,which will grow bigger as they get older.During the breeding period,males use their antlers to fight(or‘rut')for females.The males establish their territory,and attract females,by making hoarse barking sounds-which can last for more than one hour.They are solitary and territorial.Males have a special scent gland below each eye and,by rubbing it onto tree trunks and branches,they use the scent to mark their territory.

　■They usually occur in forests and dense shrublands,but they sometimes also venture into grassland.They feed on leaves,flowers,fruits and vegetables.They are most active at dusk and dawn and in the evening.　■資料：漁護署
