有朋友看到我在此欄提及不少英語慣用語是由拉丁文借來的，上周便提過 “caveat emptor” (解作「用家當心」) ，他們想知道多些這類用語。今天介紹幾個給大家吧：
1. ad hoc (特別為一目的而安排或做的；非事先計劃或非正式的)
例句：
a) The Government has formed an ad hoc committee to deal with the issue.(政府成立了一個特別委員會來處理這事件。)
b) Many of the school's problems were solved on an ad hoc basis. (學校很多問題都是臨時變通而解決的。)
2. Alma Mater (母校)
例句：The alumni all went back to their Alma Mater to celebrate its Golden Jubilee.(舊生們都回到母校慶祝金禧。)
3. et al (其他人等)
例句：The exhibition displayed works by Van Gogh et al.(這展覽展出了梵高等人的作品。)
4. magnum opus(傑作、巨著、最偉大作品)
例句：“Ulysses” is the magnum opus of James Joyce. (《尤利西斯》是詹士哉斯的最偉大作品。)
5. status quo (現狀)
例句：She is just another conservative who wants to preserve the status quo.(她只不過是想維護現狀的另一位保守派。)
6.vice versa (反之亦然)
例句： Students should respect teachers and vice versa.(學生應尊重教師，反之亦然。)
