The increasing openness toward sex among local teens in recent years has had their parents worried to death, but the adults tend to feel too embarrassed to talk about it with their teenage children face to face. A recent survey found over 90 percent of parents with teenage children attending middle school could not accept their children having sex or moving in with their peers or having an abortion.

Nevertheless, most of the parents surveyed admitted they would not personally teach their pubescent kids about sex. An expert on sex education said some parents had become depressed and even suicidal after learning about their children's “trouble” because they did not know how to handle the reality. He therefore advised parents to keep an open mind over this subject and discuss it with their children casually.

The City University of Hong Kong (CityU) conducted the random survey by questionnaire -- asking 500 parents with children in middle (high) school for their view on their children's sex and love life—for Radio and Television Hong Kong (RTHK) last month. The results showed 61 percent of the parents were worried that dating and romance would affect their children's education, 58.7 percent feared their children might have sex with another person and 47.6 percent dreaded the idea of their daughter getting knocked up and having an abortion.

The scholar in charge of the research project, Dr Ho Chi-on, a lecturer of City University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, pointed out that the study had revealed many parents were “worried but not doing anything”.

“It had also found that 79.3 percent of parents thought sex education should be conducted by teachers in school, while 66.5 percent believed it was schools’ and social workers’ responsibility, apparently forgetting they were part of the effort, too,” Ho said, adding that schools could organize more workshops and lectures to teach parents related knowledge and skills. ■春生 資深翻譯員
