英文字是字母文字，同一個字可以演變成很多個字。雖然這些字源於同一個基本意念，但是演變之後，卻衍生出不同的意思。因此，碰上驟眼看來很相似的字，要特別小心，認清其中的微妙分別，不要弄錯。
今次談一組類似的形容詞，就是 classic, classical 和classy。
Classic一字有多重意義。一個意義是「典型」、「代表性」，即是某個事物具備同類型事物的所有特徵或特色，可以作為該類事物的代表。
Tai O is a classic example of a fishing village in the old days.
大澳是昔日漁村的典型例子。
Beckham's classic pass helped the England team get an equalizer.
碧咸的典型傳球幫助英格蘭扳平。
Classic另一個意義是「精闢」、「優秀」，表示某個作品（特別是文章或電影）是同類中最優秀的作品。
Death on the Nile is one of the classic works of Agatha Christie.
《尼羅河之死》是克里斯蒂的優秀作品之一。
然而classical的意義是「古典」，指一些古典時期的作品，或指一些屬於古典風格的作品，特別應用於形容音樂或文學，通常表示這些作品具有長遠歷史。
That piece of classical music was written by Mozart.
這個古典音樂樂章是莫扎特的作品。
He is a classical pianist who is also interested in modern music.
他是彈奏古典音樂的鋼琴家，他亦對現代音樂感興趣。
classical也帶有「傳統」的意義，特別是指一些傳統學派。
Adam Smith is considered one of the founders of classical economics.
阿當斯密被視為傳統經濟學派的創始人之一。
以下兩個例子可以清楚呈現classic與classical的分別。
Dream of the Red Chamber is a classic work of Chinese Literature.
《紅樓夢》是一部優秀的中國文學作品。

《紅樓夢》是一部中國古典文學作品。
另一形容詞classy，意思則有所不同，是時尚、有格調的意思。
The classy lobby tells people that this is a grand hotel.
很有氣派的大堂讓人一望而知這是一家高尚的酒店。
She looks really classy today.
她今天看來很摩登時尚。
其實classic, classical, classy這些字都看來很相似，源於class，但引伸出不同的意義。
