聖母沉睡圖 Icon of the Koimesis

這幅聖像描繪聖母的靈魂升天後，肉體開始沉睡的場景，畫面中央是斜㷇著的聖母，左右是兩位教會執事打扮的天使，後面還有一位天使手執卷軸，上面以希臘文寫著：「停止哀歌，這是歡欣而非哀傷的時刻，因聖母即將被提升天……她將為我們祈求上帝的恩典。」雲朵中畫了耶穌的十二門徒。這幅畫脫離了傳統拜占庭和後拜占庭時期「沉睡聖母」聖像畫法。傳統的構圖是耶穌站在聖母瑪利亞之後，迎接化為嬰兒形體的聖母的靈魂。
The icon depicts the Dormition of the Virgin. In the centre is the recumbent figure of the Virgin flanked by two angels dressed as deacons; a third angel in the centre holds a scroll inscribed in Greek:"Cease lamenting; it is a time for joy, not sorrow, for the Mother of God has been lifted up from the earth...she comes to intercede for us." To the sides of the angel's head are the twelve apostles in clouds. This icon departs from the traditional Byzantine and post-Byzantine iconography of the Dormition(Koimesis) in which Christ stands behind the figure of Mary, receiving her soul in the form of an infant. ■大英博物館館藏
