It is a regretful error to leave young children alone at home.
上述兩個例子錯誤使用了regretful和regrettable，應該說：
She is regretful about leaving the young children alone at home.
她對獨留子女在家感到很後悔。
It is a regrettable error to leave young children alone at home.
獨留子女在家是不當的行為。
Regret解「後悔」「可惜」「遺憾」「不幸」
很多英文字既可加上-ful，亦可加上-able。然而，這兩個後綴所衍生的涵義和用法並不相同。Regret是其中一個例子。這個字可以解作「後悔」、「可惜」、「遺憾」、「不幸」等等。當年美國派戰機炸毀中國設於貝爾格萊德的大使館後，克林頓總統是這樣說的：
“It was an accident and I regret it.”
「這是一次意外。我感到遺憾。」
如果要套用上面的regretful和regrettable，或許可以這樣報道：
President Clinton was regretful about the accident.
克林頓總統對於意外感到遺憾。
The American jet fighters caused a regrettable accident.美國戰機在執行任務時，引起不幸的意外。
regretful形容心境感受
要準確應用regretful和regrettable並不困難。Regretful/regretfully多是形容一個人的心境，表明他對於某事件的感受，譬如說「我感到後悔、遺憾、不幸」。
The tourist spitted on the pavement and didn't seem regretful of his action.
那個遊客吐痰在行人道上，也沒有為此顯露悔意。
Regrettable/regrettably是形容一件事情。即是說，某件事發生了，是一件不好的事，「令人感到後悔、遺憾、不幸」。
The whole team was saddened by the regrettable defeat in the second leg of the semi-final.
由於在半準決賽第二回合吃了後悔莫及的敗仗，整支球隊感到很悲哀。
還有一個小小的地方需要留意。Regretful是一個t。Regrettable是兩個t。日後使用這兩個字的時候，只要明白所形容的是某個人，還是要形容某件事，便可以分清應該用哪個字，這樣便不會出錯。
