我常跟學生講：「學英文不能與中文相提並論，英語世界有很多概念和表達方式是跟中文不同的，其中一項要弄清楚的是詞類，英文叫 “word class” 或 “parts of speech”。」
大家看看下列4句句子：
1.He succeeded in winning the champion. (他成功奪魁。)
2.His was successful in winning the champion. (他成功奪魁。)
3.He won the champion successfully. (他奪魁成功了。)
4.We congratulated him on his success in winning the champion. ( 我們恭賀他成功奪魁。)
4句都說出「他成功奪魁」這回事，中文都用「成功」，但英語卻用了4種詞類：1.“ succeeded” 是動詞 (verb)；2.“successful"是形容詞 (adjective)；3.“successfully”是副詞 (adverb)；4. “success”是名詞 (noun)。英語世界內這些詞類分野很精細，不可有偏差，用錯了便貽笑大方。
