語文有時很奧妙。同一個字在不同的句子中，會產生截然不同的意義。
英文的quite字就是這樣的例子。 Quite的意思是「相當」、「頗為」。試舉例說明之。
I am quite tired but I think I can still finish the assignment on time.
我已經相當疲倦，但我想我可以準時完成任務。
There are quite a number of tourists in the mall.
商場內有頗多遊客。
含義可以是「並非百分百」「不很」
從上面的例子可以看到，quite字作這個用途時，背後的含義是「並非百分百」、「不很」、「不十分」。然而，在程度上並不是很高，不是「十分疲倦」或「很多遊客」，故此不可視為「十分」、「全然」、「很」。再舉一例子說明：
He is quite smart but he is not what I would call a clever man.
他相當聰明，但在我眼內他不算是聰明人。
那就是說，他聰明，但我認為他不十分聰明、非絕頂聰明。
所以要記住，quite的第一個要義是「並非百分百」、「不十分」。
話鋒一轉，原來quite也有表示程度很高，跡近「十分」、「全然」的時候。試舉例說明之。
The two companies are both in the shipping business but their business strategies are quite different.
這兩家公司都是從事航運業務，但兩者的營商策略截然不同。
Though they are twin brothers, their aptitudes are not quite the same.
他們雖然是孿生兄弟，但彼此的學習天分殊不一樣。
細心觀察下，發現 quite 的意義是「全部」，例如quite different、not quite the same是「絲毫也不一樣」的意思。那就等於「全然」不一樣了。
美語通常理解為completely/very
美式英語通常把quite理解為completely/very，即是「十分」、「全然」的意思。
Quite有時也用來加強語氣。
This is quite the worst soccer game I have ever watched.
這要算我從來看過最糟糕的足球賽。
quite a few 的意思是頗多，不是只幾個。
He has quite a few friends in the company who can put things straight.
他在這家公司認識好幾個有能力整頓局面的朋友。
言下之意，是他在這家公司有「頗多」有力的朋友。
