Hot Sunday Proves a Killer

It felt like early summer on Sunday (May 4) as temperatures reached 29 and 30 degrees Celsius in most of Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories while the hottest spot recorded up to 32 degrees, though it is only early May right now.

The warmer than usual weather saw at least 43 participants and workers feel sick with suspected sun stroke at a mass outdoor gathering to celebrate the May 4 Youth Day. A middle-aged man was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital after he collapsed while jogging in Mid-levels, Central.

The Senior Citizen Home Safety Association said 1,036 elderly residents sought help through the Personal Emergency Link (PE Link) system, of them 71 were taken to hospitals for treatment.

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) explained the hot weather was the result of abundant sunshine, weak winds and high humidity, but it expected cooler days this week.

An HKO spokesperson told Wen Wei Po ,“some people might have felt the weather hotter than a thermometer indicated mainly because there was little wind and a lot of sunshine. The relative humidity was quite high, too.”

The forecast for this week, however, puts average temperatures between 23-27 degrees Celsius, noticeably cooler than Sunday.

A 59 year old man was jogging with his wife and son when he found himself out of breath much too early than usual and soon collapsed. He was certified dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.

At the Victoria Park in Causeway Bay, some 10,000 students gathered to celebrate the approaching Beijing Olympic Games (in August) and May 4 Youth Day under the blazing sun. At least 4 people felt sick and one of them fainted on the spot.

A doctor reminded people to seek shade from the sun in such weather, especially when their heartbeat is faster than normal feel somewhat hard of breathing. If some one summers from sunstroke, move him or her into a shaded spot and feed him or her plenty of water to cool down.
