近日在傳媒上看到四川地震造成重大傷亡，以及救援人員冒著危險努力搜救受災群眾的報道。
在報章上見到兩個中文詞語。一個是搜救。另一個是救援。英文也有兩個與救災有關的字。一個是rescue。另一個是relief。
Rescue是把人從災場或危難中拯救出來的意思，即是搜救。
搜救人員及隊伍可稱作rescuers, rescue workers, rescue team, rescue crew 或 rescue squad.
Rescue是搜救
The rescue team pushed their way through the rugged terrains and saved hundreds of villagers trapped in the mountain.
搜救隊伍跨越崎嶇山嶺，救出數百名受困村民。
Rescue workers pulled survivors from a wrecked building.
搜救人員把生還者從倒塌的建築物中拉出。
搜救行動及活動可稱作rescue operations, rescue services。
Rescue operations are still going on a week after the earthquake.
搜救行動在地震一星期後仍繼續進行。
Relief是援助
Relief是一個名詞，有消災解難的意思。實質含義是協助一些活在痛苦中的人消除痛苦。亦指金錢，食品，衣物等物資的援助。
既然relief有消除苦楚的意思，那麼在救災工作中，這個字不僅指救出災民，還包含後續的醫療、輔助和支援工作，所以稱為「救援」較適當。
Some relief workers were buried by mudslides while repairing roads in Sichuan.
一些救援人員在四川修路時被山泥淹沒。
Relief work/effort will focus on the people left homeless.
救援工作將集中於無家可歸的災民。
The relief operation also includes the provision of food, water and other supplies to the victims.
救援行動包括向災民提供糧食、水和其他供需品。
由此可見，relief不僅僅是把人「救」出來，還包括其後各項支「援」行動，如生活輔助(support)、醫療(medical aid)、供需品(provisions)等，故此稱為救援。
由此可以看到rescue是搶救人命，而relief是援助有需要的人士，當然兩者同樣重要。
