黃先生與陳先生有意到歐洲旅遊。
Wong：We should go to Europe for a holiday. How do you feel?
黃：我們應該到歐洲。你覺得怎樣？
Chan：I do think this is a good idea but I don't have the money and the time.
陳：我真的覺得這是很好的主意，但是我沒有錢，也沒有時間。
I do think this is a good idea，與I think this is a good idea（沒有加do），在語氣上有分別。加上do字之後，就如中文加上「真的」、「實在」、「確實」等加重語氣的字。比方說，「我真的覺得這個意見很好」，語氣上比「我覺得這個意見很好」較重。
以do強調「真的」「確實」
這種加重語氣的說法是利用 emphatic‘do’（以do加強語氣），即是故意在動詞前面加do、does或did，語氣變得較慎重其事。
再看下面例子：
It is not my fault. I did explain to them several times.
問題不在我身上。我確實跟他們解釋過很多次。
She does often make people embarrassed.
她確實時常令人尷尬。
雖然我們也可說‘I explained to them several times’，‘She often makes people embarrassed.’但是總不及‘did explain’‘does make’來得強烈。
重複結束語亦可加重語氣
可是，並不是每種場合都可以用emphatic‘do’加重語氣。我們可以用重複的結束語(reinforcement tag)加重語氣。說完一句話後，再加一個後續的短句重複前面的助動詞或be動詞，藉以顯示對前面所說的話持認真態度。
Wong: Europe is such a good place for holiday, it really is.
黃：歐洲是很好的旅遊地點，真的是。
Chan: I can't afford a holiday now, I can't.
陳：我不可能在這時候放假，就是不能。
這些句子都採用be 動詞 (is) 或助動詞（can't），不可能在前面加do，可用重複的結束語‘…, it is’或‘…, I can't’加重語氣。
又例如：
She will win, she surely will.
她一定會勝出，一定會。
還有，以前談過的否定式句法 (negative inversion)，也可以用於加重語氣。
Never will I work with that man again. I don't think he is an honest person.
我絕對不會再與這人合作。我不覺得他是誠實的人。
以上方法可以有聲有色地增加說話的慎重程度，有需要時可考慮靈活地使用。
