Tang Yin (1470-1523) was a native of Suzhou, Jiangsu province. His accomplishments in painting enabled him to be ranked among the "Four Masters of the Ming Dynasty". Having studied painting directly with Zhou Chen (ca.1450-ca.1535) and Shen Zhou (1427-1509), Tang forged his individual landscape style by synthesizing the two traditions of landscape painting: the Academic Style based upon the works of the Song painters Li Tang (ca.1049-ca.1130) and Ma Yuan (act. ca.1190-ca.1225) and the literati painting tradition of the "Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty". His landscapes therefore freely juxtaposed stylistic features of these traditions. Tang was also adept at painting figures, particularly female figures, and his works exhibit both the classical style characterized by fine line and charming colours and ink sketches executed with a swift and dashing brush. His calligraphy was derived from the style of Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322) and he was particularly proficient at running and regular scripts. ■資料:香港藝術館
