看一看下列句子，試找出它們在結構上有何共通點：
1. The number of people living under the poverty line has reached an all time high.
(生活在貧窮線下的人數已達歷年高峰。)
2. With the economy reviving gradually, we should expect people to lead a better life.
(經濟開始復甦，我們期望人們生活會好起來。)
3. Responding to the survey findings, Mr. Cheung claimed that a series of measures have been introduced to help the poor.
(張先生回應調查報告時稱，已有一連串扶貧措施推出。)
對！每一句都有一個present participle phrase來敘事或述說人物：句一的"living under the poverty line"指"the number of people"、句二的"reviving gradually"指"the economy"及句三的"responding to the survey finding"指"Mr. Cheung"。
"ing"不一定指進行式
在英語世界內，加了ing的動詞不一定是描述進行式(continuous tense)，這些統稱present participle(現在分詞)的英文字，擁有多種用途，上列4句用了present participle的結構便是其中一種。
下列句子怎樣寫才正確？
1. (run) Look! The dog is _____ after the cat.
2. (interest) I found the book quite ______ .

上述小測試的每一句都用了present participle，只有首句是明顯的continuous tense(進行式時態)；第二句的"interesting"是作adjective(形容詞)用途；第三句的"playing"用作noun(名詞)，在英語世界內稱為"gerund"(動名詞)；而第四句的"strolling"便如文首3句的用途一樣：present participle phrases是也。
