田徑場上賽跑，規定選手在比賽未開始的時候要在起跑線後，聽到鳴槍後才開跑，選手們都會用腳尖（toe）踏在起跑線（line）上準備，這就是原本toe the line的意思。
這跑道上的準備動作，表現了運動員遵守遊戲規則，跟隨指示，後來用作比喻，指「遵照規定，服從命令」。由於士兵和海軍列隊時候都有類似規定，不可超越某些標記或板條，亦有toe the mark或toe the plank的說法，但最常用的還是toe the line。
現在說某人toe the line，意思上是指這人循規蹈矩，服從規章命令，不敢逾越，以求符合既定的標準。有時，亦會指在壓力下服從某些團體的政策及路線，並且附以特定字詞加以指明，例如服從政黨路線則是toe the party line，公司政策是toe the company line。
The teacher will soon get the little children to toe the line.
教師很快就會令到那些小孩子循規蹈矩。
You may not agree with the new rules, but if you want to keep your job, you have to toe the line.
你或許不會同意新訂的規則，但是為了保住職位，你必須遵循。
The chairman expelled those members who didn't toe the party line.
主席把不遵循黨的路線的黨員開除出黨。
All the time he just toes the line and conforms. We can't expect anything innovative.
一直以來他只是循規蹈矩，墨守成規，我們不能期望他有什麼創見。
循規蹈矩是toe the line，而不守規矩就是step out of line。
離開行列 越軌違規
軍隊列隊巡行，排成一行一行的，動作一致，極為整齊。隊伍是一個單位，每個人都要跟隨大隊踏步，踏出（step）行列之外out of line，就是越軌行為，有違常規。
如果做出的舉止和一般可接受的準則有差距，或有欠妥當，可以說step / get / be out of line，亦指所做的行為與眾不同，不依常軌。
The teacher will punish pupils who step out of line.
教師將會懲罰那些不守規矩的學生。
There is a dress code. There is no point stepping out of line by wearing shorts to this formal occasion.
這個場合有衣着規定，無謂穿短褲出席正式場合破壞規矩。
He should be able to get the promotion if he doesn't get out of line.
如果他沒有做出欠妥當，違常規的行為，應該可以獲得擢升。
Step out of line at times and you will be able to discover a new style for yourself.
有時，打破一些規範，你可能會為自己找到一個新風格。
日前去了一個免費的韓國音樂會，其中一隊表演組合充滿活力和新鮮感，介紹說他們的名稱在韓語中有「另闢蹊徑、不走一般路」的意思。他們不走常規路，開拓自己的風格。循規蹈矩（toe the line）不一定是正面，不守常規（step out of line）也不一定是負面意思。■Lina CHU
