國際局勢不時存有變數，英國因為脫歐要舉行大選，美國四年一度的總統選舉亦會在明年舉行，不少有意的政壇人士已在準備，更有人已宣佈參選，傳媒報道的時候，有時會說他們 「throw his / her hat into the ring」。
所謂throw / toss one's hat into the ring（帽子拋進圈裡），即是決定參加比賽或競選，宣佈參賽或參選意願，成為參選人。為何拋帽變成參選？因為這用語來自拳擊賽，ring是拳擊場，用繩圍起來的拳擊圈，像個擂台。以前有很多流動且有獎金的拳擊賽，台下的人要挑戰台上拳手，就把帽拋進圈內，即表示要上台。這動作後來用作比喻有意參加各種競爭或比賽，後期多用於政治方面，表示參選。
She is going to throw her hat in the ring and join the singing competition.
她決定接受挑戰，參加那歌唱比賽。
He should make a good candidate for the post of department head but he has decided not to throw his hat in the ring.
他本應是部門主管一職的理想人選，但是他決定不參加甄選。

有人說希拉里可能再度披甲上陣，參選下一任總統。
把帽拋出帶有挑戰意味，但把帽脫下則完全不同，是表示尊敬。脫帽是一種西方禮儀，進入教堂、法庭、議事堂等嚴肅地方都會脫帽，以示尊重。以前男士在有女士在場的地方亦會除下帽子，以示紳士風度。現在說take one's hat off/doff one's hat to someone對某人脫帽行禮，即是說尊重佩服這人，欣賞他們的行為或成就，覺得值得表揚。口語說hats off to someone，是對這人所做的事表達讚賞或祝賀。
Hats off to the team for their wonderful work in fixing the problem within such a short time.
向小組短時間內解決問題的優秀表現致敬。
We should doff our hats to him for his generous contribution to charity.
我們應該向他致敬，因他慷慨捐輸予公益事業。
He wins among so many strong competitors. I take my hat off to him.
他在芸芸強勁對手中勝出，我真要向他致敬。
拋帽和脫帽都有特別意思，甚至戴帽也有特別意思，例如說某人戴上帽子說話talk through one's hat，意思是這人胡言亂語，說廢話，對自己所說的內容其實不認識亦不明白。為什麼會有這個說法？來源已經不太清楚，有說是來自以前英國議會，議員發言需要戴帽，別的議員不能打斷他，所以議員「拉布」的時候就戴上帽子，說一些無關痛癢或者沒有意義的東西。
He was talking through his hat in the interview. His talk didn't make sense.
他在訪談中東拉西扯，說廢話，說的沒一點意義。
You shouldn't listen to his advice. He knows nothing about investment and is just talking through his hat.
你不應該聽他的建議。他其實對投資一竅不通，只是胡說亂道。
