　以數目字為中心的英文詞語，很多都非常有趣及生動。例如曾蔭權最近的心情或可用on cloud nine（九重天）來形容。

　ONE： Go （somebody） one better（勝人一籌；比〔某…〕優勝）。

　例：I did very well, but he went one better and won the championship.（我雖然表現很好，但他勝我一籌，奪得第一名。）

　例：Do you think Shanghai can go Hong Kong one better economically in the long run?（你認為假以時日，上海能否在經濟上比香港優勝？）

　Be back to square one（打回原形）。

　在棋盤遊戲中，棋子從第一格（square one）開始，走向終點。途中有各種事故可以把棋子「打回頭」。「Be back to square one」表示在作了某些改變或有了某些進步後突然回復當初的狀態。

　例：Ann has finally sold her loss-making business.An optimist, she is not unduly disappointed about being back to square one.（阿銀終於賣掉她那虧蝕中的生意。但她抱樂觀主義，沒有因打回原形而過分失望。）

　THREE：Three cheers （for something/somebody）（為……歡呼三遍）。

　在祝捷會上，台上的領頭人會喊「Hip-Hip」，台下的群眾就和應「Hurray!」這樣要連喊三遍。

　例：Three cheers for the Hong Kong Expedition Team! Hip-Hip-Hurray! Hip-Hip-Hurray! Hip-Hip-Hurray!

　從「three cheers」衍生了「two cheers」，表示不太熱烈的歡迎。

　例：The workers gave two cheers for the 10-minute extension of their lunch break.

　FIVE：High five（一種表示雀躍的手勢）

　兩人（或以上）各高舉單或雙手，以手心拍對方的手心。

　例：After scoring one point, the two team members gave each other a high five.

　SEVEN：seven-year itch（《七年之癢》）

　這是1955年的一齣美國喜劇的片名。主角瑪莉蓮夢露在片中那裙子被風吹起的鏡頭，已成經典。此片風靡一時，並令「seven-year itch」添了一個新意思（原本是指疥瘡）：婚後七年對伴侶生厭，開始對其他異性存非份之想。

　At sixes and sevens（亂七八糟，混亂不堪）

　例：The old lady was at sixes and sevens when her dog slipped the leash and dashed around erratically.（當老婆婆的犬隻從栓索逃脫出來並四處亂跑時，情況非常混亂。）

　NINE：On cloud nine（處於極樂和無上幸福的境界）。

　美國氣象局將雲分為九層，最高的是第九層。你在「cloud nine」時，是人生極樂的時候。

　例：The team was on cloud nine after winning the trophy.

　例：Mr. Tsang must have been on cloud nine when appointed last week.（曾先生上星期被委任時想必極為快樂。）

　（Dress oneself） to the nines（穿著得悅目／合時／完美）

　例：The Acting Chief Executive will probably dress himself to the nines apart from wearing a bow tie.

　（署理行政長官除了結煲呔外，到時可能還會穿著更得體。）
