要描述群眾聚集的示威活動，有多個英文字可以使用。以示威為例，概括地描述整個示威活動的字是demonstration，指一群人集會或遊行，表態反對或支持某人某事。
The people in Macau held a demonstration to protest against economic parity.（澳門群眾舉行示威活動，抗議當地貧富懸殊狀況。）要遊行，就要上街。上街遊行的用語是take to the street。遊行示威通常都是抗議某事某人。
People in Macau took to the street to protest against economic parity.（澳門群眾上街遊行，抗議當地的貧富懸殊狀況。）上街遊行，就要有方向。有方向的群眾集體前進，是遊行行列，英文是march或procession。
More and more people joined the procession and marched towards the police barricade.（越來越多人加入遊行行列，向警方的路障防線進發。）遊行示威必定有抗議的事項。抗議的英文是protest，可以作動詞，也可以作名詞。在以上的例子是作動詞使用。為抗議而遊行，稱作protest march，使用上與demonstration類似，所不同者，protest march必須涉及遊行。
遊行是一次爭取群眾支持的集會（rally）。這個字有號召群眾支持的意義。群眾加入一個行列，以示對某個訴求的支持。
The clashes drew more people to the rally.（衝突引致更多群眾加入遊行隊伍。）既然遊行示威，就要有示威者和遊行人士。示威者是protester。遊行人士是marcher。
