近日香港政壇最熱門的話題，莫過於選舉。
參選的英文是stand for election。我們可以說：
Six people have decided to stand for the by-election.
六位人士決定參加補選。
Is he standing for the presidential election?
他會否參加總統選舉？
配合chance使用 解勝出機會
其實 stand 一字可以和選舉有許多串連。Stand配合chance使用，解作勝出機會。
Who stands a better chance of winning?
誰的勝出機會較高？
A candidate who is unknown to the voters does not stand a chance of winning.
如果參選人是選民毫不認識的，不會有勝出機會。
參選者都會發表政綱，表明自己對某些議題的立場。這裡，stand字同樣派上用場，因為這個字也可解作立場。
His chance of winning depends on his stand on education policy.
他勝出的機會決定於他對教育政策的立場。
Where does he stand on the issue of education policy?
他對於教育政策有甚麼立場/意見？
堅持立場用stand by
堅持自己的立場，可以用stand by。
He will stand by his notion of equality.
他會堅持自己有關平等的信念。
He is ready to stand by his suggestion on education.
他會堅持自己對教育的建議。
表態反對，可以用stand against 或者stand out against。
They make a stand against any violent action.
他們表態反對任何暴力行為。
They will stand out against discrimination and injustice.
他們反對歧視和不公平。
政治人物會象徵或代表某些主張或特質。這時，可用stand for。
They stand for rights of the people.
他們象徵人民的權利。
They stand for close ties with the grassroots.
他們的形象是與基層有較密切的聯繫。
同一個stand字，竟然可以串連多個用法，真的很有趣。
