陳同學正在埋首苦讀，準備明天的年終考試。室友黃同學明天不用考試，在聽流行歌曲，還伴著唱。陳同學按捺不住，高聲對黃同學說：
“Do you mind?”
陳同學這是在責罵黃同學，叫他「別吵」。
“Do you mind”可以表達你對某人或他們所做的不滿。
“mind”是一個很有禮貌的用字
但 “mind”本來是一個很有禮貌的用字，委婉地向別人作出請求，或者請求別人允許自己做某些事。
請求別人做事或不要做某些事，可用“Do you mind”。這與Please或Could you please類似。
Do you mind giving me a ride to the supermarket?
你會介意載我到超級市場嗎？
這句子等同於：
Please (Could you please) give me a ride to the supermarket.
你可不可以載我到超級市場？
所不同者，前句以問句形式表達。後者不是問句。
Do you mind not smoking in the office？等於
Please don’t smoke in the office.
請你不要在辦公室內吸煙。（希望你不介意。）
隨後動詞應使用動名詞
留意：凡使用Do you mind這類問句結構，隨後的動詞應該使用-ing的動名詞(gerund)，而不應該使用to + infinitive。不可以寫成 “Do you mind to give me a ride to the supermarket?”（這是錯誤的），同樣，不可以寫成“Do you mind not to smoke in the office?”。
也可以用Do you mind請求別人允許自己做某些事，這與使用May I相似，只是更客氣一些。
這類句子可以有兩個組成方式。其一是do you mind “my”。另一個是do you mind “me”。
Do you mind my opening the window?
Do you mind me opening the window?
我想打開窗戶，可以嗎？（你不會介意吧？）
上面兩句都一樣，只不過用my是著重opening the window的動作，針對的是開窗的行動。用me則是以自己作為賓語(object)，針對的是我個人。
這二句等同於：
May I open the window?
我可以打開窗戶嗎？
更禮貌一點 要用Would you mind
另外，可以用if clause代替動名詞，‘Do you mind if I …?’意義也一樣。
Do you mind if I open the window?
如果想更禮貌一點，可以用過去式，這時便要用Would you mind。
Would you mind not smoking in the office?
Would you mind if I opened the window?
這就顯得較為客氣，「希望你不介意這樣做。」，「我這樣做，希望你不介意。」
